4 January 09  - SUNDAY

Dear Friends,

 Happy New Year 2009!

New Years Eve this year was spent in a little Baptist church half a world away from home where a handful of the church members gathered for a special service. After praying in the new year, we stood outside in the frosty air and watched the sky all around us erupt with fireworks. The fireworks and celebrating continued long into the night all over the city. In Russia, New Years is the biggest holiday of the year. Christmas on the other hand is a small, religious holiday celebrated on January seventh.

This Sunday evening a group of us from the church went to the children's home to have a Christmas party. We were able to tell the Christmas story, make yarn angels and serve cake and juice. The older children have been asking some very interesting questions lately.

Last lesson, we spent thirty minutes talking to them about evolution. They have been so indoctrinated at school that they have a hard time believing that God could have made the whole world. This week they were trying to understand the virgin birth.

Sometimes it is difficult to get through the lesson but, it is great that they are asking questions. It must be unbelievably hard to be without parents in a world filled with conflicting ideologies. Please pray for these children.

Those that sent Christmas cards were such a blessing to me. Thank you so much. God bless you all.

In Christ,
Miss Mandy

16 December 08  - TUESDAY

Dear Friends,

Hello again from icy Siberia! Today is a little warmer than yesterday with a current temperature of 9 Fahrenheit. Of course there is that -16 windchill. Fortunately, I am getting used to the cold.

Semester exams begin on Friday and I am a little apprehensive about my spoken Russian exam. It is, of course, a verbal test, and I have been struggling a bit in that area. I know the correct forms and structures but when it is time for me to speak I get tense and it all comes out wrong. So, I will be devoting some time to practice and prayer and with God's enabling I hope to do well.

My spoken Russian teacher, Larissa Ivanovna has shown some interest in my beliefs lately. I am praying to have further opportunity to witness to her.

It's hard to believe that it is the Christmas season in America. Here in Russia, Christmas is a small religious holiday celebrated on the seventh of January. The highly celebrated holiday is New Years. After experiencing American Christmas celebrations all my life, it is a bit odd to see "Happy New Year" decorations every where.

At church, the children are practicing for the Christmas play that we will have on the 7th. We will also have a celebration at the children's home. I am looking forward to this.

Once again, I want to thank you all for your prayers for Lily. She has a new joy since she received Christ. I was able to give her a Chinese Bible and I hope to spend some time discipling her. I am praying that the Lord will bring a strong Christian Chinese lady into her life. She needs someone to work with her in her own language.

To update you on the dear ladies that I drive to church, Zoya is home from the hospital but still sick. Nadya is still in the hospital and her condition is the same (paralysis, slurred speech). Valia has been able to come to church most of the time and seems to be doing fairly well. Your continued prayers are appreciated. I hope all of your are having a wonderful Christmas time. Remember not to get so busy celebrating that you forget to worship and give thanks. God bless and keep you all.

In Christ,

Miss Mandy

Dear Friends,

I am happy to begin this update with some wonderful news! Lily informed me this morning that she has asked Jesus into her heart! I was overjoyed. She says that she plans to come to church every Sunday. It's amazing how the Lord works. She did not come to church for the past two Sundays and I was concerned that she had lost interest. Then on Friday she told me that she met a Russian woman who witnessed to her at the Chinese market. I don't know who that woman was but I am grateful to her. Pastor Jones is helping me to get a Bible for her in Chinese. Please pray for Lily as she grows in Christ.

We were pleased to welcome the Dean family to Russia this past Wednesday. They have been on deputation to come to Krasnoyarsk as missionaries for the past four years. This visit will be for three months to work on their documents and then they hope to return permanently. It's exciting to see another missionary family planning to help fill the great needs here. They would appreciate your prayers as they adjust to the culture and climate. Also, due to recent changes to immigration policy, it has been harder for missionaries to stay here. So, please keep the document process in prayer as well.

As for me, I am doing well. I do have some financial needs and am praying for the rest of my support to come in soon. I want to thank all of you who have contributed prayer and financial support. You have all been such a great blessing!

In Christ,

Hello Everyone!

I can't believe that tomorrow is the first day of December! November has flown by. It has been an unusually warm winter so far. Temperatures have only gone as low as -6 (Celsius) but I have been assured that things will be back to their usual -25 by Wednesday. Thursday was a very enjoyable time of celebrating Thanksgiving with the Jones and Heron families. Lubov, our friend who teaches at school 33 was there also with her son. They were both amazed by all the American food. Pastor Jones hopes to send an invitation to the students from school 33 to visit around Christmas time. It is a good opportunity to reach out to them even though we are no longer allowed in the school.

Amy, Jessica's sister in law is doing well. The doctors are planning a less aggressive chemotherapy so there will be less chance of it harming the baby. Please continue to pray for her. Also, the ladies that I usually drive to church are all suffering health problems. Valia has been struggling with her blood pressure making her very weak. Zoya and Nadya are both in the hospital. Nadya is having a recurrence of an extensive paralysis. She recovered from this once before but the doctors are very concerned. These ladies have had very difficult lives, please pray for them.

My language study at the university is going well. We are preparing for exams starting the nineteenth. After exams are over, classes will be finished until February second. The next two months will be quite busy. I am looking forward to the Christmas season. Thank you all so very much for your prayers. I hope God is blessing you as greatly as he is blessing me.

Dear Friends,

The services on Sunday went well and we had quite a crowd of hyper children at the children's home. Those kids really are alot of fun. Lili is continuing to come every Sunday. On the way home form school the other day, she was telling me about the traditional Chinese tales of how the world was created. In one story, a woman created the world and then made herself a husband from the mud on the bank of a river. The story was quite similar to God's creation of Adam. Many cultures have been discovered to have ancient tales with remarkable similarities to Biblical accounts. These tales provide me with an excellent opportunity to discuss God's Word and the gospel. People of most Asian cultures do not make decisions regarding spiritual things quickly. Please continue to pray for Lili.

God has been and continues to be very good to me. I believe Russia is having a greater impact on me than I am on her.  Away from the comfortable and familiar, I must trust God in a whole new way. Please continue to pray for my personal relationship with my God as well as for the ministry here. God bless you.

In Christ,

Miss Mandy

9 November 08

Dear Friends,

This morning I awoke to one of the prettiest snowfalls that I have seen in a long time. It was very wet snow and fell into large fluffy piles on everything. Every twig on the trees was outlined in white. Even weeds and telephone wires were pretty today. Of course, driving to church was a little tricky and getting the car cleaned off took some time but it was worth it. (I may not feel like this in a few months but for now I will enjoy the novelty.)

The Lord provided me with an opportunity to have a good long talk with Lili. She decided to sit in on the children's sunday school today and afterward was asking the teachers if they knew stories about Jesus. I took a flash card set and my Bible and told her about Jesus. I told her why He came and gave her the plan of Salvation. She said that she had attended both the Buddhist temple and a Christian church in China and she is not sure who is right. We also discussed how the world came into being and whether or not creation is true. She is not ready to decide yet but she knows that I am happy to answer any questions that she has. Please pray for her.

Another urgent prayer request has come to light recently. Jessica Jone's sister-in-law Amy has been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. She is a pastor's wife, the mother of six young children and has just discovered that she is one-month into another pregnancy. The cancer is in her lymph nodes now and she and her family are in great need of your prayers. Please make this a priority. The diagnosis is very bleak but our God is a God of miracles. I know that you will be as faithful in your prayers for this family as you are for me. God bless your for your faithfulness.

Sincerely,

Miss Mandy

Hello Friends!

The past few days have been eventful. The services went well on Sunday and I was pleased that my Chinese friend Lily came to church. Although her Russian is much better than mine, she did not understand the Sunday School lesson. The simple explanation for this maybe that Constantine was preaching. He is a history professor and a very intelligent man, therefore, he tends to use more a more complex vocabulary. Lily went with me to the children's church downstairs for the morning service and seemed to enjoy herself very much. She plans to continue coming and it is my hope that she will understand the sermons given by Pastor Jones and Volodia. Please pray for me as I witness to her.

I spent my afternoon and evening on Monday babysitting the Jones and Sterling children while their parents went out. Babysitting eight children can be quite a busy job even when they are as well behaved as these missionary children are. All in all, the everything went well and we finished the day with only a bruised head, a pinched finger and a small nosebleed.

Tuesday, I was invited to visit my teacher, Larrisa  Ivonovna's, English class. I spent an hour and a half talking with a room full of Russian university students. The questions covered everything from politics to hobbies. I enjoyed myself and was able to share a little about my faith.

Today, I was in the same building as Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. He came to Krasnoyarsk to review some federal projects and the university was one of them. Unfortunately, I did not get to see him. He came and went while I was in class. There were police everywhere and the building security was tight. The most I saw of him however, were some pictures that an excited student was showing off on the bus. He was offering to sell copies at 100 rubles apiece. (And who says that Russians aren't capitalists!)

The days are flying by. We have had the first snowfall of the season and the winter is just beginning. They say that the winter is extremely cold but beautiful here. I will be sure to take many pictures.

Thank you for your prayers. The Lord continues to bless me far more than I deserve. Please continue to pray for me and the ministry here in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

Sincerely,

Miss Mandy

17 September 08  - WEDNESDAY

Life is moving along and I have fallen into a daily routine. I am keeping busy between studies and ministry.

This past Sunday we were able to restart Sunday School in the children's home. Lena taught them about Elijah being fed by ravens. The kids really seemed to enjoy the story songs and craft time.

This Saturday, Nancy and I will be going to school 99 to take part in an English class. This first time I will simply tell them about myself and let them ask questions. In the future I will be teaching stories and asking them comprehension questions. In the past Missionary Marsha Dunlap, Nancy and Pastor Jones have told Bible stories and stories of famous Christians. I truly think I am going to enjoy this ministry.

My prayers were answered and I was able to find a reasonably priced computer. I will be able to use it while I am here and then sell it when I leave.

Language classes are going well. The extra hours of study have resulted in a much better grasp of the language. With much more study I hope to catch up to the rest of my class, most of whom have studied Russian before.

For those that have been praying for Natasha and Ivan's baby girl, I just want you to know that she is doing well. Being only three pounds, her heart is a little underdeveloped. However, the doctors say that she is growing stronger. They named her Tanya.

Thank you once again for your prayers and support.

Es Bogum (go with God).

10 September 08  - WEDNESDAY

Previet! (This is Russian for the familiar Hello)

Just a quick update from your Siberian correspondent. On Sunday the services went well at Krasnoyarsk Baptist Church. I was able to help with the children's services.

Monday night we had a visitor here at the apartment. She had been working on her English with the Winklers (a missionary family) while they were here in Russia. Now that they have left she would like to continue so, Nancy and I will help her together and then I will continue. This is a good opportunity to share the gospel.

I have only been in Siberia for a week and a half, yet I managed to get on television! A student team came to our Russian class last week and interviewed four of the students; I was one of them. The program aired at eleven pm on Tuesday night.  I am grateful that I was able to tell them that I am here as a missionary and I was able to mention the church. Who knows what God can do with that.

Please continue to pray for me as I study the Russian language. I would like to become conversant as soon as I can. Also, pray that I can be a witness to my teachers and classmates. God has been so faithful to me and I know He will continue. Thank you for your love and prayers. Even half a world away I know that I am not forgotten. God be with you.

Es Bogum (go with God)

5 September 08  - FRIDAY

Hello Everyone!

I have survived my first week of Russian language classes, have learned the Russian alphabet, and am now able to (slowly) read.

I am the only American in my class. There are eight Chinese students and two Nigerians. The Nigerians speak English. In my conversations with them I have been able to share my faith. Upon discovering that I am a missionary, they promptly demanded English Bibles. The church has a stockpile, so, I was able to provide their request. I also gave them a tract with the church's address.

The Chinese students don't speak English. I pray that with time our Russian will improve so that I may be a witness to them as well.

I have been recently presented with a new opportunity. On Saturdays there are English practice classes held for the 7th through 9th grade students in one of the public schools. The teacher knows the missionaries here and invites them to come teach stories and converse with the students in English. I will be doing this at least once a month.

I greatly appreciate your prayers. Please pray for me as I continue to learn the language. Also, Nancy will start teaching me to drive her car next week. Eventually I will be taking over the ministry of driving some of the elderly ladies to church on Sundays.

Es Bogum. (Go with God.)

2 September 08  - TUESDAY

Dear Friends,

I just want to thank you for your prayers! Today was my first real day of class.  The first class period was Russian phonetics. I am picking up on the alphabet rather quickly. Then came Russian grammar. I was warned about it by the Russians. They say that not even native Russians get it right!

Pray that God will give me strength to tackle the language every day. It is exhausting to try to adjust to a completely different culture, language and ministry. I must live daily in God's strength.

Also, please pray that God will provide me with a computer so that I can keep in contact in the months to come.

Once again, thanks for all your prayers!

29 August 08  - FRIDAY

Hello Everyone!

I am a city girl now. I live on the ninth floor of an apartment building in the middle of the city of Krasnoyarsk.  There are five of us women living here. One of them is pregnant and is staying with us for the last month until she has the baby, and another moved in from a village and will get her own place as soon as she gets on her feet. The living space accommodates us all very well.

Eventually there will be just two of us here.  My roommate will not speak English but she is outgoing, sweet and fun and likes to help me with my Russian. The need to communicate will help me learn the language faster.

I appreciate all your prayers.
God be with you!

Miss Mandy

27 August 08  - WEDNESDAY

Dear Friends,

Wow, my mind is in a whirl! I have been through so many experiences in the last 48-hours!

I arrived at Sherementyevo airport and spent over 45 minutes standing in a passport check line only to find out that I did not have the needed immigration form. Fortunately a kind English-speaking German directed me to the form table and made sure that I could come back to the front of the line afterward.

Next, I spent about an hour and a half trying to get on a bus to the domestic terminal. Finally, with some help from an English speaking Russian who teaches in New Jersey, I got to my destination. My flight had left 20 minutes before.

After that, there was a long sequence of dragging 120 pounds of luggage from office to office. In the end I got a ticket for the same time the next evening. I found an isolated corner and laid my suitcases flat end to end, laid down on them and used two folded shirts for a pillow. I fell asleep and slept well.

The next evening as I checked in for my flight to Krasnoyarsk I found out that my luggage was over Russian regulation. They wanted to charge me a significant amount and I did not have the money. Once again God sent an English speaking Russian to my rescue. A young man talked to the check-in attendant and eventually I ended up standing in front of the head of the airline who waived the fee with a cheerful laugh.

Later, after disembarking at my destination, I was met at the airport by Nancy, the missionary with whom I am staying.  While waiting for my luggage, I saw the young man who had helped me at the airport. Nancy invited him to church. I wonder if God allowed me to go through that delay in order that I could meet this young man and invite him to church?

God has been good and I know I will lead a useful, joyful time here. Keep praying! Thank you for all of your support.

Sincerely,

Miss Mandy
